BETA Snippets - May 2019

LATEST FROM THE BRITISH EQUESTRIAN TRADE ASSOCIATION

Hello there! As May draws to a close and the long summer ahead beckons, we are back with your regular monthly instalment of BETA Snippets. We look at our supporting sponsorship at Bramham, launch the BETA Equestrian Calendar Competition, provide a handy reminder about the forthcoming BETA Feed Conference and deliver a round-up of our June courses. Enjoy!

Backing Bramham for another year

Members of the BETA team are preparing to decamp down the road to Bramham International Horse Trials, which runs from 6 to 9 June. We love having a presence at this landmark Northern equestrian event and, this year, BETA is pleased to be a supporting sponsor.

We will be working hard to promote the trade association and its members, offering free riding hat and body protector safety checks and running an exciting array of competitions. These include a luxury prize draw to win £1,500 worth of equestrian goodies for horse and rider.

Consumers will also have a chance to nominate the SEIB Retailer of the Year – one of the annual BETA Business Awards – which celebrates exemplary service. Winners of best online and bricks-and-mortar stores will be announced at the BETA Gala Dinner, on Monday 20 January.

We’ve also packed a box of fabulous gold and silver rosettes, ready to reward winners of the BETA Best Stand Awards, which recognise excellence among tradestand holders.

If you plan to pay a visit, don’t forget to pop along to the BETA stand to say hello. We’re just in front of the Equi-Trek Arena. Oh, and please keep a look out for the brilliant BETA showjump and cross-country fence, which really flag up that BETA is at Bramham.

Get snap happy – and be a winner!

The search is on to find some stunning horsey images to grace the 2020 BETA calendar! If you have something suitable up your sleeve or, if taking pictures is your passion, why not enter the BETA Equestrian Calendar Competition? Retailers – you could encourage your customers to take part, too. The best 12 will be selected to represent each month and the one judged Best in Show will win the lucky entrant a fabulous luxury gift hamper.

To enter, all images must be in a digital format – minimum size 150 x 115mm (1,722 x 1,358px) at 300dpi. They should have been taken by you and must not be subject to copyright.

All entries should be emailed to tina@beta-uk.org with your name, contact details and a description of the image. The deadline is 18 September and the winner will be announced on social media.

Tasty menu at BETA Feed Conference

Equestrian foodies are invited to tuck into a day of tasty presentations at the 2020 BETA Feed Conference, at St John's Solihull hotel, near Birmingham, on Thursday 20 June. This annual industry event, supported by Premier Nutrition, is simply unmissable for everyone who works in the equine feed sector – including retailers, nutritionists and university and college lecturers.

There is a great range of top-quality speakers covering a variety of topics. These include:

* Dr Danica Pollard, of the Animal Health Trust, looking at the Incidence and Clinical Signs of Owner Reported Equine Laminitis in a Cohort of Horses and Ponies in Britain and exploring recent developments in risk factors for laminitis.

* Richard Newton, the Animal Health Trust’s director of epidemiology and disease surveillance, speaking on Equine Influenza and the Importance of Biosecurity to the Health of the Industry.

* Stewart Everett, of the Equine Register, focusing on the Central Equine Database and asking: “Where have all the horses gone?”

* BETA executive director Claire Williams providing an update on the new National Equestrian Survey, looking at the feeding habits of the nation’s horse owners.

Day delegate costs are: BETA members £95, non-members £140 and SMS members £115. There is also an option for an overnight stay with dinner on the evening before the event. This costs £205 for BETA members, £250 for non-members and £230 for SMS members. All prices are plus VAT.

Meet our BETA Safety Week winner

The BETA Safety Week Test, which ran throughout BETA member retail stores and events, including Badminton Horse Trials and the Kentucky Three-Day Event, has a winner!

Lucky Marie Callister, of Chawleigh, Devon, successfully answered the questions and was first out of the hat to bag a £150 shopping voucher to spend with her local BETA retailer.

Rider safety is a priority for Marie, who is a long-standing committee member of the Pony Club’s Eggesford branch. It was not long ago that her son Morgan had a fall when riding out on the roads.

“His skull cap was nearly new and he hit it so hard that it split in two,” she explained. “Morgan was fine and the hat did its job of protecting him and my first priority was to replace it with a new one before he could ride again.”

In fact, Marie bought him a rather smart Charles Owen skull cap from Barnstaple Equestrian Supplies, in her home county, and she is now looking forward to spending her winnings. Our picture above shows Morgan riding his new pony, Muffin.
