The Equality Standard provides an opportunity for governing bodies to consider equality in all their functions and services. As a minimum all sports are required to have an Equality Policy. The Standard is owned by the 5 Sports Councils through the Sports Councils Equality Group (SCEG). The first ever equality Standard for sport was launched in November 2004. The Equality Standard was updated and re-launched by SCEG in March 2012 to ensure it remained fit for purpose and reflected the latest equality legislation.
In 2013 horsescotland was awarded the Preliminary Level of the Equality Standard. The decision was unanimous and testament to this is the fact that two of the documents that were provided in support of horsescotland’s application are currently being used by the Sports Council Equality Group as examples of good practice. Special mention was made acknowledging the support and commitment of our Lead Officer, Bill McKinlay, to equality and to achieving this level.
The Preliminary Level is the second of four levels and it means that horsescotland has achieved the following outcomes:
- Your organisation is aware of its current external profile and position in terms of equality
- Your organisation has a robust equality action plan to advance equality and increase participation. Staff (paid and unpaid) understand how this plan relates to their role
- All board members and staff (paid and unpaid) within your organisation understand the general principles of equality and how it relates to their sport
- Your recruitment practices and policies seek to advance equality
This award is valid for three years and within this time period we will have started working towards the Intermediate and eventually Advanced Level standards.
